Herniated & Bulging Disc
Treatment in Chicago's West Loop

Got the MRI results and now you're being told surgery might be the answer? Before you go that route — most disc herniations resolve with the right conservative care. We help Chicago patients reduce disc-related pain, decompress irritated nerves, and get back to full function without going under the knife.

Bulging vs. Herniated Disc — What's the Difference?

These terms are often used interchangeably but they describe two different things. A bulging disc means the outer disc wall has expanded beyond its normal boundary — think of a burger patty pressed too flat. The wall is still intact. A herniated disc means the inner disc material has pushed through a tear in that outer wall and is now directly pressing on surrounding nerves.

Both can cause significant pain, radiating symptoms, and nerve irritation. And both respond well to conservative chiropractic care.

🔬 What the Research Actually Says About Disc Surgery

Studies consistently show that the majority of lumbar disc herniations — including large ones — improve significantly with conservative care over 6–12 weeks without surgery.

Surgery is generally recommended only when conservative care has been exhausted, or in cases of progressive neurological deficit such as worsening leg weakness or loss of bladder/bowel control.

If you haven't tried a structured conservative care program yet, that's the right first step.

Common Causes & Symptoms

What Causes Disc Problems

  • Cumulative compression from prolonged sitting with poor lumbar support

  • Acute lifting injury with poor spinal mechanics

  • Repetitive flexion strain from work or training

  • Age-related disc dehydration and reduced shock absorption

  • Sudden trauma — car accident, fall, or collision sport injury

  • Pre-existing spinal instability or muscle weakness around the disc

Symptoms We Address

  • Sharp or deep back pain that worsens with sitting or bending

  • Shooting pain, numbness, or tingling into the glute, leg, or foot

  • Sciatica symptoms driven by disc compression on the nerve root

  • Muscle weakness or heaviness in the leg

  • Pain that improves with walking but returns when still

  • Morning stiffness that takes a long time to ease

  • Upper back or neck pain with arm symptoms (cervical disc)

How We Treat Herniated & Bulging Discs in Chicago

We start with a thorough evaluation to confirm the disc level involved, assess nerve function, and understand what's been aggravating it. Your care plan is then built around reducing disc compression, relieving nerve irritation, and rebuilding the spinal stability that protects the disc long-term. Treatment may include:

Chiropractic Adjustments

Restores motion to restricted spinal joints above and below the affected disc — reducing the compensatory loading that keeps disc symptoms aggravated.

Active Release Technique (ART)

Releases the muscle guarding and fascial tension surrounding the disc injury — reducing the secondary compression that amplifies disc-related nerve pain.

Cervical Traction Therapy

(cervical disc cases) Gently creates space between compressed cervical vertebrae, reducing pressure on the herniated disc and relieving the nerve root symptoms travelling into the arm or hand.

Corrective Exercise & Rehab

Rebuilds the deep core and spinal stabilizers that protect the disc under load — the critical step that prevents the same injury from recurring when you return to full activity.

IASTM, Cupping & Soft Tissue Therapy

Reduces inflammation and improves circulation in the soft tissue surrounding the affected disc level — supporting the healing environment the disc needs to resorb and recover.

Cervical Traction for Neck Disc Cases

For cervical disc herniations causing neck, arm, or hand symptoms, cervical traction gently creates space between compressed vertebrae — reducing nerve pressure and relieving radiating pain. For lumbar disc cases, we focus on adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and targeted rehab to restore function.

You Work With Dr. Bryant Directly

No hand-offs to assistants. No assembly-line appointments. Dr. Bryant personally evaluates and treats you every visit.

Therapies, One Location, Faster Results

Most clinics offer one or two modalities. We combine chiropractic, ART, traction, rehab, and soft tissue work — so you progress faster and maintain longer.

We Rebuild Stability So It Doesn't Come Back

Reducing pain is step one. Step two is strengthening the core, glutes, and spinal stabilizers that protect the disc — so the same injury doesn't happen again six months later.
