Active Release Technique
in Chicago's West Loop

That same tight spot in your neck. The hip that won't open up no matter how much you stretch. The shoulder that catches every time you press overhead. ART goes directly to the adhesion causing the restriction — breaking it up at the source with precision that no amount of stretching or foam rolling can replicate.

What Is Active Release Technique — And Why Does It Work?

When a muscle is overused — through repetitive training, prolonged desk posture, or accumulated stress — the body responds by laying down scar tissue and adhesions between the muscle fibers and surrounding fascia. These adhesions are what create the chronic tightness, restricted movement, and recurring pain that never fully resolves with rest or stretching.

ART works by applying precise manual tension to the affected structure while the patient actively moves the body part through a specific range of motion. This combination of compression and movement creates a shearing force at the adhesion — breaking it up at the exact location it exists, not just lengthening the muscle around it.

The result is restored tissue glide, improved range of motion, and reduced pain — often noticeable within the first session.

What ART Treats

Common Conditions We Treat With ART

  • Neck & upper trap tightness from desk work or stress

  • Rotator cuff strain & shoulder impingement

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome & wrist RSI

  • Tennis elbow & golfer's elbow

  • Hip flexor tightness & piriformis syndrome

  • IT band syndrome & runner's knee

  • Patellar tendonitis & quad tightness

  • Achilles tendonitis & plantar fasciitis

  • Sciatica driven by piriformis compression

  • Chronic hamstring & calf tightness

Who Benefits Most From ART

  • Runners dealing with recurring lower leg or knee issues

  • Weightlifters with shoulder, hip, or forearm restriction

  • Desk workers with chronic neck, trap, or wrist tightness

  • Anyone with an overuse injury that rest didn't fully resolve

  • Athletes returning from injury with residual scar tissue

  • People who stretch constantly but never feel fully loose

  • Anyone with a "knot" that keeps coming back in the same spot

How ART Works — Step by Step

At Renewed Body Chiropractic, your care plan is built around you — not a standard protocol. After a thorough evaluation, we combine the therapies most effective for your specific cause and severity.

1. Movement Assessment

We assess the affected area — identifying which specific muscle, tendon, nerve, or fascial plane is restricted and where the adhesion is located within it.

2. Contact & Tension

Precise manual contact is applied to the restricted structure — taking up tension at the specific point of the adhesion, not just broadly over the muscle belly.

3. Active Movement

While contact is maintained, you move the affected body part through a specific range of motion — creating the shearing force that breaks up the adhesion at the contact point.

4. Reassessment

We immediately reassess range of motion and tissue quality to confirm the restriction has released — and identify any remaining layers that need addressing.

💡 Why ART Gets Results When Massage and Stretching Don't

Stretching pulls a muscle from both ends. It lengthens the tissue but doesn't break up the adhesions between layers — those stay exactly where they are.

Massage applies compression to the surface. It relaxes tension but can't reach the specific adhesion point between two muscle layers or along a tendon sheath.

ART contacts the exact adhesion and creates motion through it simultaneously — which is the only mechanism that actually breaks it up. That's why chronic restrictions that have resisted years of stretching and massage often resolve quickly with ART.
