4 Ways to Help Relieve Sciatica
Sciatica can cause pain, burning, numbness, or tingling that travels from the lower back or hip into the leg. Symptoms may become more noticeable after prolonged sitting, driving, bending, or exercising.
Although sciatica can have different causes, these four strategies may help reduce irritation and keep you moving more comfortably.
1. Break Up Long Periods of Sitting
Sitting for extended periods can increase pressure and stiffness around the lower back and hips.
Try standing, walking, or gently stretching for a few minutes every 30–60 minutes. Even short movement breaks throughout the day can make a difference.
2. Use Gentle, Consistent Movement
Complete rest is not always the best solution for sciatica. Gentle activities such as walking may help reduce stiffness and prevent the body from becoming more guarded.
Start with an amount of movement you can tolerate without significantly increasing your symptoms. Avoid forcing your way through sharp or worsening pain.
3. Stretch the Hips—Without Overdoing It
Tightness around the hips and glutes may contribute to discomfort, especially for people who spend much of the day sitting.
Gentle hip and glute stretches may help, but more stretching is not always better. Stop if a movement causes pain, numbness, or tingling to travel farther down the leg.
4. Strengthen the Muscles That Support You
Your core, hips, and glutes help support your lower back during sitting, walking, lifting, and exercise.
Targeted strengthening exercises can improve control and help your body handle everyday activities more comfortably. The right exercises depend on what is contributing to your symptoms, so your plan should be based on your individual needs.
