Kinesio Taping
in Chicago's West Loop

Support that stays with you between visits. A joint that needs reinforcement during training. Swelling that needs draining. Posture feedback that persists through a full workday. Kinesio tape does specific, targeted jobs well — as part of a complete treatment plan, not as a replacement for one.

What Kinesio Tape Actually Does — The Mechanism

Kinesio tape is an elastic therapeutic tape applied to the skin with specific tension and direction. It works through two primary mechanisms — and understanding both is what separates clinical application from the tape you see athletes wearing without much thought to placement.

The first mechanism is decompression. The tape's elastic recoil gently lifts the skin away from the underlying tissue, reducing pressure on pain receptors in the superficial layer and creating space for improved lymphatic drainage and circulation. This is why it's effective for swelling management and acute soft tissue soreness.

The second mechanism is proprioception. The continuous skin contact provides the nervous system with ongoing sensory input about the taped area's position and movement — improving muscle activation, joint awareness, and movement control in ways that persist for as long as the tape is worn.

.💡 What Kinesio Tape Can and Can't Do

It can: Reduce swelling after acute injury or soft tissue treatment, provide proprioceptive feedback that improves muscle activation and posture, offer joint support without restricting movement, and extend the effects of treatment between visits.

It can't: Break up adhesions, restore joint motion, fix structural movement dysfunction, or replace ART, IASTM, or chiropractic adjustments. We use it where it genuinely adds value — and we'll always tell you when something more structural is what you actually need.

Common Uses at Our Office

  • Post-treatment swelling reduction after ART or IASTM

  • Shoulder support during return to pressing or overhead work

  • Knee support for runners during return-to-training phase

  • Ankle stability support after sprain rehabilitation

  • Postural facilitation for rounded shoulder correction

  • Plantar fascia support between visits for persistent foot pain

  • Lower back facilitation for patients relearning neutral posture

Who Benefits Most

  • Athletes returning to training after injury who need joint support

  • Patients with acute swelling that needs active drainage

  • Desk workers who benefit from postural feedback during long workdays

  • Anyone in active rehab who needs movement support between visits

  • Patients who have just completed a heavy soft tissue session

How We Apply Kinesio Tape — Four Clinical Uses

Application direction, tension, and pattern all change the effect. Here's how we use it at Renewed Body:

Lymphatic / Swelling Reduction

Fan-shaped application with minimal tension over a swollen area — lifts the skin to improve lymphatic drainage and reduce fluid accumulation after injury or intensive soft tissue work.

Joint Support

Applied around a joint with more tension to provide mechanical support without full restriction — useful for recovering ankles, knees, and shoulders that need reinforcement during activity.

Proprioceptive / Postural Feedback

Applied along a muscle or joint with specific tension to provide continuous sensory input — improving muscle activation patterns and postural awareness during long workdays or athletic training.

Muscle Facilitation or Inhibition

Applied with tension in the direction of muscle contraction to facilitate an underactive muscle, or against contraction direction to reduce tone in an overactive one — used to complement corrective exercise.
