IASTM Therapy
in Chicago's West Loop

Dense scar tissue in a tendon. A fascial plane that's been restricted for years. The chronic tightness that foam rolling, stretching, and even massage can't reach. IASTM uses precision instruments to detect and break down the exact restriction — stimulating the healing response that remodels dysfunctional tissue into healthy, mobile tissue.

What Is IASTM — And Why Use Instruments?

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) uses specially designed stainless steel tools with beveled edges to scan and treat the soft tissue. As the instrument glides across the skin, its edges amplify subtle changes in tissue texture — allowing the clinician to detect fascial restrictions, scar tissue deposits, and areas of chronic dysfunction with a level of precision that hands alone cannot achieve.

Once the restriction is located, the instrument is used to apply controlled microtrauma to the area. This deliberate mechanical stress triggers a localized inflammatory healing response — signaling the body to remodel the dysfunctional collagen and scar tissue into healthy, organized tissue. Blood flow increases, fibroblast activity accelerates, and the restricted tissue gradually becomes pliable and functional again.

💡 Why Instruments Reach What Hands Can't

Manual therapy is highly effective for detecting and treating muscle belly tension. But dense fascial restrictions — particularly in tendons, at fascial interfaces, and in areas of chronic scar tissue — are often too subtle for fingers alone to locate precisely and too resistant for hands alone to break down effectively.

The beveled edge of an IASTM instrument concentrates force into a narrow contact point, allowing it to glide through soft tissue and transmit fine feedback about tissue quality. The mechanical effect is also more targeted — delivering the right level of microtrauma to stimulate healing without the broad compression of manual work.

Conditions IASTM Treats

Common Conditions We Treat With IASTM

  • Plantar fasciitis — dense fascial restriction in the foot arch

  • Achilles tendinopathy — scar tissue in the tendon body

  • Shin splints — tibial periosteal restriction

  • IT band syndrome — lateral thigh & knee fascial restriction

  • Tennis & golfer's elbow — lateral & medial epicondyle tendinopathy

  • Patellar tendonitis — scar tissue at the patellar tendon

  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy — shoulder soft tissue restriction

  • Post-surgical scar tissue — any area with surgical adhesions

Who Benefits Most

  • Runners with plantar fasciitis, shin splints, or Achilles issues

  • Athletes with tendinopathy that hasn't responded to rest

  • Anyone with post-surgical scar tissue limiting movement

  • Patients with chronic fascial tightness in the same area for months or years

  • Desk workers with forearm, wrist, or neck fascial restriction

  • Anyone whose issue involves dense, leather-like tissue that feels different from the other side

How IASTM Works — Step by Step

1. Movement & Tissue Assessment

We evaluate the affected area — identifying restricted movement, tender points, and the specific fascial planes or tendons most likely to contain scar tissue or restriction.

2. Scanning

The instrument is glided across the tissue with light pressure, transmitting feedback through the tool's edge. Areas of restriction feel distinctly different from healthy tissue — allowing us to precisely map where treatment is needed.

3. Treatment

Once the restriction is located, controlled stroking with the instrument applies targeted microtrauma to the area — breaking down the scar tissue and triggering the body's collagen remodeling response.

4. Movement Integration

After instrument work, we move the area through range of motion and often follow with ART, stretching, or corrective exercise — helping the newly mobilized tissue integrate into proper movement patterns.
