For your convenience, I’ve put together a list of some of the most common questions I am asked and their respective answers. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, drop me a line and I’ll do my best to get you the information as soon as possible.

IS CHIROPRACTIC SAFE?

Yes, chiropractic has an outstanding safety record. Chiropractic care uses a conservative and natural approach to health that avoids invasive surgeries and addictive drugs. Chiropractor’s malpractice premiums are minimal compared to medical doctors.

HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC WORK?

Chiropractic works by restoring your body’s natural ability to heal properly. When the nervous system is working properly all the cells, tissues, and organs of the body are designed to resist disease and illness. Our approach to better health is to locate and remove any interference to your nervous system.

WHAT TYPES OF HEALTH INSURANCE DO YOU ACCEPT?

Most insurance plans are accepted at our office. We accept auto accident, workers compensation, personal injury and most health insurance plans, including Medicare. Since there are so many plans and coverage varies widely, please call us to find out if your plan covers care in our office. Our staff will verify and explain your benefits before treatment, at no charge.

DO I NEED A DOCTOR’S REFERRAL?

No, all 50 states recognize doctors of chiropractic as primary care providers. That means patients with back pain or other musculoskeletal complaints can go straight to a chiropractor for diagnosis and treatment- without a referral from a medical doctor.

DOES CHIROPRACTIC CARE WORK FOR ALL TYPES OF HEALTH PROBLEMS?

It does not, however chiropractic care helps to treat a wide range of health problems outside of “back” problems. This is because chiropractic care helps to improve the function of the nervous system. With a normally function nervous system, the body’s natural healing ability can improve a variety of health problems.

CAN  A PERSON WHO HAD BACK SURGERY SEE A CHIROPRACTOR?

Absolutely! It is unfortunate that more than half of people who have spinal surgery discover the return of their original symptoms’ months or years after their initial surgery. This all too common occurrence is known as “failed back surgery syndrome”. Chiropractic care in most cases is able to prevent repeated back surgeries or even prevent surgery in the first place!

WHAT IS SUBLUXATION?

It is a misaligned spinal bone (vertebrae), which causes compression, tension, irritation and damage to the central nervous system. The central nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves. The central nervous system totally controls all function and healing in the human body. It causes interference of the central nervous system which causes the organs and muscles of the body to mal-function and heal poorly due to the interference they create in the central nerve system.

CAN I TELL IF I HAVE A SUBLUXATION?

Not always. A subluxation is like a dental cavity, meaning, you may have it a long time before symptoms appear. This is why periodic spinal checkups are so important.

CAN I ADJUST MYSELF?

Never! A proper chiropractic adjustment is a specific force, applied in a specific direction to a specific joint, it is virtually impossible to adjust oneself safely, correctly and accurately. It is possible to turn, bend or twist in certain ways that create a “popping or cracking” sound that sometimes accompanies a chiropractic adjustment. Sadly, this type of joint manipulation is counterproductive and actually worsens the situation by making an unstable spine even more unstable!

ARE ALL PATIENTS ADJUSTED THE SAME?

No, the doctor will evaluate each patient’s unique spinal issue and develops an individual course of care. Each chiropractic adjustment builds on the previous adjustment. Each patient’s case is uniquely different from every other patient.

IS IT OK TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR IF I’M PREGNANT?

Yes! Any time is a great time for a better functioning nervous system. Pregnant women find that chiropractic adjustments can help with pregnancy discomforts and can improve their pregnancy, making their delivery easier for themselves and the baby! Adjusting techniques are always adapted to a patient’s size, weight, age and health condition.

WHAT CAUSES THE SOUND DURING AN ADJUSTMENT?

Adjustments do not always produce a sound, however adjustments do create the sound of a spinal “release or popping” sound. The sound is caused by gas rushing in to fill the partial vacuum created when the joints are slightly separated. This sound is painless and totally harmless.

WHAT IS A CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT?

A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in a precise direction that is applied to a joint that is subluxated, “locked up” or not moving properly. The purpose of this safe and natural procedure is to eliminate interference to the nervous system. Improving spinal function helps to improve overall health.

WHAT TYPE OF EDUCATION DO CHIROPRACTORS HAVE?

Chiropractic education and medical education are similar in many aspects and different in others because of the different philosophies. Chiropractors do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery. Medical doctors do perform surgery and prescribe drugs but don’t check for vertebral subluxations. After graduating with a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree, each candidate must pass the four parts of the National Board of Examinations. The doctor must then apply to a governmental or professional licensing board and must pass additional tests before being granted the privilege to practice.

WHY DO CHIROPRACTORS TAKE X-RAYS?

X-rays are taken to reveal internal structures and alignment of the spine. Chiropractors are concerned about any underlying disease processes and disorders of the spine such as spinal degeneration, arthritis, abnormal development, bone spurs, disc disorders, tumors and spinal curvatures. X-ray can provide a blueprint for correcting the spine back to proper alignment.

IS A GOOD WORKOUT THE SAME AS GETTING ADJUSTED?

No. While exercise is an extremely important part of maintaining good health, it cannot substitute for a chiropractic adjustment. A physical workout can put wear and tear on improperly functioning joints.
